Joseph Chiu is a Canadian composer and electronic musician known for his colourful and organic use of sound. His body of work includes music for film and concert music. 

Named by Ludwig van Toronto as one of “six emerging Canadian composers to keep an eye on,” his music has been presented and recorded by artists and ensembles throughout North America and Europe, including collaborations with the Quatuor Bozzini, Continuum Contemporary Ensemble, and ArrayMusic. These performances have appeared at festivals and venues such as the Canadian Music Centre, Tippet Rise Art Centre, and the Nordic Percussion Festival.

Joseph has written the scores to a number of films in a variety of genres such as drama, documentary, and arthouse. His credits include the visual poem, The Spirit of the Wild, directed by Solomon Olsen, the upcoming supernatural drama film, Phantom Waves, directed by Nippich Suppasiripoka, and Kohl Jordan’s drama about memory, Half Life.

Joseph is an alumnus of the Canadian League of Composers’ PIVOT mentorship program and has held residency at the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity where his work for the Dior Quartet was premiered as part of the centre’s inaugural Evolution Concert Series. His collaboration with the Evergreen Club Contemporary Gamelan resulted in the work ‘Metallic Clouds Conjure Iron Rain’, an exploration of the intersection between traditional Indonesian Gamelan and contemporary writing techniques.

Joseph is classically trained, obtaining a BMus in composition from Wilfrid Laurier University and a MMus in composition from the University of Victoria. He is based in Toronto.
